The Lake District is one of the most popular UK staycation destinations, covering over 885 square miles of rolling hills, beautiful hills and quaint countryside towns. VisitEngland recently released statistics showing that visitors have spent £1.8 billion on domestic trips from January to March 2016 (up 23% on the same period last year), meaning that staycations are becoming a thing of the future.

If you’re looking to stay local this summer, but you’re looking for things to do with your dog too, The Lake District is a fantastic destination. Here, we look at just a few of the best walks for you and your dog!  

Dog walks in the Lake District

Barrow Fell

Distance: 3 Miles | Time: 2.5hrs

At a modest height of just 1,494ft, Barrow Fell is the perfect walk to take your dog on with easy gradients to give yourself a great reward with stunning 360 degree views at the summit. You’ll be able to spot Bassenthwaite Lake, Whinlatter Forest, Grisedale Pike, Causey Pike and across to Keswick and Derwentwater. The village of Braithwaite offers a number of local pubs to finish off your day out too.

Dog Walks in the Lake District

Derwent Water

Distance: 9 miles | Time: 4hrs 

This is one of the most popular walks around, embarking on a full circuit of Derwent Water is a moderate walk that is perfect for taking your dog along on too. You can choose to go clockwise or anti-clockwise around the lake commencing from The Moot Hall in Keswick, which offers information for tourists and maps too!    

Castlehead

Distance: 2.6miles | Time: 1.5hrs

Castlehead Viewpoint is often overlooked as one of the quainter walks in the lake district, offering a moderate walk to ensure ease for taking your dog along. Located to the south of Keswick, Castlehead Viewpoint provides views of Derwent Water.  

Elterwater

Distance: 4 miles | Time: 2 hours

In the heart of the lake district, nestled close to Coniston, Elterwater offers an excellent stroll that will not be too demanding on your dog but will also offer a great deal of exercise for him and you!

Looking after your dog on your walk

Don’t forget, it’s important to look after your dog when you take him on walks. In the lakes there are always a few things you should be aware of too, making sure your dog doesn’t scare farm animals including sheep and cattle is important, if there is a big herd about then it might be a good idea to keep him on a lead. Keep your pooch hydrated with a drink of cool water along the way too, and it’s always a good idea to scope out potential rest points along the way or a restaurant/café at the end of your walk that will provide a great place to rest and grab something to eat!
