There’s no doubt that we’ve enjoyed some very hot days throughout this summer, and when the temperature is on the rise, a day out with your dog that includes a paddle, a swim, or a splash about in cool water can seem like a great idea. Although many dogs love water, some can be a little wary, so it’s important to remember not to force anything and let your dog dictate the pace of their experience.
Picnic in the park
Thoresby Park, Nottinghamshire

What could be nicer on a hot summer’s day than a picnic in the park, followed by a paddle in the river? These are just fun two of the dog-friendly activities that are on offer at Thoresby Park in the heart of Nottinghamshire.
There are over 1,000 acres of parkland to explore at Thoresby, which is open seven days a week and for the price of a £3 parking fee you can enjoy a great day out with your dogs. Begin by packing up a feast of sandwiches, drinks, and dog treats and head over to the picnic area. After you and your dog have relaxed and enjoyed your food, you will then find there is easy access to the riverside walk.

To provide your dogs with a really fun experience where they can run, swim, play, and explore, you might like to consider a visit to a specialist dog adventure play park.
Lakeview is one example and consists of 15 acres of privately owned, tranquil parkland and a man-made lake near Market Deeping in Lincolnshire. The lake is carefully managed to ensure that it remains reassuringly clean and algae-free, so your dog can safely swim.
In addition, there is a doggy playground with a tunnel, snuffle mats, a ball pit and a sandy beach. Hot and cold refreshments are available as well as toilet facilities.
Emanay Peters, who owns the facility with her father, says that people are welcome to swim with their dogs, and she often organises special events, such as breed-specific or size-specific social swims.

A year ago, Debbie Eales, who owns a training centre in Northcote, near Spilsby in Lincolnshire, built a custom-made indoor swimming pool where people could have fun with their dogs.
“It’s been really popular,” she says. “Trainers can take dogs in to the pool, or if preferred, we allow people to swim with their dogs, and they can book for up to four dogs for half an hour for £20. The pool, which is fully undercover, and is available all year round, is fabulous, and measures 16x 32 feet.
“There is a purpose-designed ramp for easy access, which leads to a safety platform where your dog can take a rest between swims. It’s perfect for encouraging dogs who are learning to swim, or for more confident dogs to enjoy themselves jumping in the water and splashing about. It’s a great way to make lovely memories and we take pictures for you to remember your time here. We provide canine life jackets and lots of floating toys for the pool, including water Hoopers. The pool is heated to between 25-30 degrees depending on the time of year, so you and your dogs can enjoy your session without feeling cold"
