Photographing your pets can be great fun. But the results aren't always as pleasing as expected. Even the professionals admit that when it comes to subject matter, all creatures great and small can be tricky customers. Here's 12 tips for making your photo session run that bit smoother from Sue Westwood-Ruttledge, who owns the Dog Photographer UK and Horse Photographer UK franchises.

1. Wear old clothes. With smaller animals, you're going to need to get down on their level and lie on the floor.

2. Don't ever use flash as this may startle small pets as well as possibly giving them unattractive "red eye".
