Why is my dog drinking excessively? Is excessive drinking something to be concerned about?

(Q) I'm always filling up my dog's water bowl. He drinks from the outside tap every time it's turned on and even drinks from the river and puddles when we go out. Can dogs develop diabetes as humans do?

(A) Vet Roberta Baxter says: Yes, dogs can develop diabetes, and yes, excessive water intake is something to be concerned about. Take your dog to your vet, together with a urine sample he has produced, and get him fully checked out.

If he is diabetic, or has an infection, or liver or kidney disease that is causing him to drink excessively, then it needs diagnosing and checking out properly in order to have the best chance of successful treatment.
