A reader asks how to deal with her dog rolling in fox poo and how to get rid of the unpleasant smells resulting from it.

There are several theories as to why some dogs do this, including masking their own scent to aid hunting, and masking their own scent from predators.

Whatever the reason, it is not pleasant for owners and getting rid of the pungent smell can be difficult. There are specific shampoos formulated for fox poo and these are preferable over some of the household remedies.

Having a really good recall and being prepared to put your dog on the lead in certain areas will all help. But, ultimately, you need to remember that this is a natural behaviour and you should remain calm and not punish your dog for it.
