Originally bred as a guard/police dog by the former Soviet Union, the Russian Black is a powerful and highly obedient guard dog. The breed was developed from using a combination of: Airedale Terrier, Caucasian Ovcharka, Rottweiler, Newfoundland, Moscow Waterdog (extinct) and the Giant and Standard Schnauzers. Bred purely as an attack/guard dog this breed is extremely powerful. Owned by the USSR until 1957 civilian breeders have only been able to modify the breed in the last 50 years. Now the emphasis of these breeders is to establish the dogs appearance, as so much of its early development with the Soviet army was based around physical ability.

Russian Black Terrier Character

The Russian Black is calm, confident and will not hesitate to defend those it loves. Despite this they are very loving and affectionate with their family group. However, they do not warm quickly to strangers and will often seem distant until they feel comfortable. This comes from their breeding as guard dogs.

Russian Black Terrier Size

Dog: 64-74cm, bitch: 62-72cm. Weight - Dog: 45-65kg, bitch: 35-45kg.

Russian Black Terrier Health

A largely healthy dog, the Russian Black has very in the way of genetic ailments. Hip Dysplasia has been known as has Progressive Retinal Atrophy.

Russian Black Terrier Special Care

This dog is very large and powerful and with his suspicious nature, care must be taken when introducing them to strangers, especially the young and old.
