The Deerhound is a sight hound bred through crossing English hounds with shaggy Scottish dogs. As the name suggests - it was bred to hunt deer and to be large enough to take down a stag on its own.

Eager to learn and please, the Deerhound is an intelligent breed that responds well to positive commands and actions. The Breed Standard describes them as having a "general bearing of gentle dignity."

Deerhound Size

Ideally dogs should measure above 76cm at the withers and weigh around 45kg. Bitches should measure 71cm and weigh about 36.5kg.

Deerhound Health

Bloat is the most common health concern for the breed but is easily avoided if care is taken during feeding.
