Puppy RSPCA hand-reared bounces back to health and finds a new home

Four-day-old puppy Doris was rescued by the animal charity, and bottle fed for four-weeks after being cruelly dumped like rubbish...

Little Doris, named after the storm that hit Britain just a day before she was rescued in February, was just a tiny bundle of fur when she was found by communal bins on Pitworth Green in Tadworth, Surrey back in February, 2017.

Now, almost six months on, the tiny pup has transformed into a beautiful and bouncy young dog.

Deputy manager at the centre, Liz Wood, became Doris’ surrogate mum for three months. Liz bottle fed the pup while she was still very young and was left without a mum to nurse her.

Liz said: “Doris was very lucky she was found – she was very small and extremely vulnerable when she came in to us at RSPCA Millbrook. She was so tiny we weren’t sure if she would even survive without a mum.”

But after plenty of TLC, and round-the-clock bottle feeds, Doris pulled through and grew into, staff think, a German shepherd-cross.

“Doris was so tiny we didn’t know what breed she was or even how big she would grow,” Liz added. “Look at her now – she has turned into a stunning young dog, and I’m so proud of her.“

I simply could not believe someone would dump such a tiny puppy, she was so small and vulnerable.”

Doris has gone on to find a happy new home with owners Jack Campfield and Jodie Jones in Godalming, Surrey.

The young couple said they were completely smitten with their miracle pup the moment they laid eyes on her.

Jack said: “It really was love at first sight when we saw Doris. We just knew she was the one for us. We saw her bounding around the centre and we knew we just had to take her home.

“It is amazing she survived. She is such an intelligent dog, and we completely adore her. Everyone that meets her falls for her. She even has her own Instagram account now with over 700 followers!

“She just loves life and she is so intelligent. Her favourite thing is swimming – you can’t keep her out of the water! She is a real foodie too – she loves her food.

“She is such a friendly lovable girl. I’m a postman – and she loves jumping in my van with me, she is the only dog I know that doesn’t bark at the postman!”
