Author: katrina

My 2 year old Yorkshire Terrier does this and I've always seen it as a soothing activity on her part, which relaxes her and lulls her off to sleep. Doesn't seem like anything to worry about.

Author: katrina

Because that's how new breeds get started. Just like with words and language, all the breeds we have now had to start somewhere. Some will stick around and some won't. Most nonsense about so-called "real" breeds is just pure snobbery.

Which food?

Author: Loz

As a rule i dont feed for at least an hour after exercise, as it gives the body chance to adjust blood flow back to the organs (like the stomach) etc after concentrating mainly on muscles etc kind of like us, i know it i eat straight after iv been doing something strenuous i feel awful :(

I have fed (before switching to raw) Fish4dogs, Burns, JWB, and Natures Diet (which is a wet food) all were good quality, cheaper in the long run if you buy in bulk and Dots was healthy on them.

If she is fussy i would get a little wet food of something like natures diet or natures harvest and mix a little in with her kibble. That might tempt her. If she doesnt eat it after 15 mins like Bextull said take it away, and offer her it again at her next meal time, with NO treats in between!

Mind you the way i look at it (hence another reason for switching to raw) was i know i would get bored if i ate the same thing day in and day out, so its perfectly feasible for dogs to get the same.

Author: CnT

See Tiggi is very well behaved for me but if I leave her for an hour or so with anyone else then she becomes this crazed wild animal, she will settle after a while but her behaviour is odd to how she is with me. I did wonder if it was a seperation thing so I installed camera's in the house and left her when I went to work like I normally do with just her kong (I also leave this with her when I leave her with anyone else) I came home watched the video and within minutes of me leaving she got in her bed with her kong ate the contents then fell asleep so why she isnt like this when left with someone else is really strange... Also when out walking she is protective not overly but enough for me to feel safe out at night or alone etc but my boyfriend came to meet me one night and she went mental at him and was still wary of him for the rest of the walk yet she lives with him!! I dont treat her like a baby she is a dog so I treat her like a dog but her bond with me if defo very strong... She's fab with strange dogs and other animals... So I think its just different for each dog and each situation but I have noticed that most aggressive dogs tend to be owned by men... For status image :S

Author: maishka

Here is a little update on Honey's tooth. I asked my trainer to look at it and see what she thinks, she said the vet should remove it. I started thinking--vet bills-- I visited my breeder as she wanted to see how Honey had developed. I asked her to look at the tooth, she scooped honey up and walked away saying 'I'll try and get it out for you, if she screams then the vet will have to handle it.' She was gone for about 1 minute then came back smiling and said
'done'. I noticed a little later that honey was drooling alot and bleeding a little. The breeder said it came out easy, but then again I didn't see it happen. I am glad that its sorted now, and happy that I don't have to take her to the vet. - but I hope it didn't hurt her to much.

Oscars favourite toy is bottles, plastic bottles  And i sometimes will them with water to make them heavier for him!!! He loves them, they even fly in random directions all by themselves so he is amused for quite some time too!!!

Author: Roseollie

Hi All,

I am undertaking a degree at Hatrpury University in Animal Science and as part of my program I have to do a dissertation.

My dissertation title is Dog Owner Perception on Canine Natural Therapies: Inc. Acupuncture, Hydrotherapy, Homeopathy and Chiropractic Manipulation.

I am using a questionnaire to get my results.

If any of you could help me by filling in a questionnaire (Download from the link below, highlight your answers and email to lucinda.carter@hotmail.co.uk) I would be most grateful.

Thank you to all who take the time to fill it in, and once you have emailed it I will email you back with your questionnaire number in order for you to withdraw at any time.

http://www.mediafire.com/?7x464aireqy7m3a if this link does not work please email me and I will send you the questionnaire as an attachment.

Regards,
Author: zahada

If you can, try to get Adaptil (previously called DAP) plug in (your vet should have some, if not he can order it). It is a liquid that evaporates when plugged in and contains pheromones just like a nursing bitch gives off. The pheromones keep the puppies calm. Adaptil also comes in a collar version. Either (or both if you can afford them) should help Barney to calm down.

You could also ask your vet a product called Zylkene. Comes in capsules and is used to ease nervousness, fear and anxiety in dogs.

I know that, but he has had them before while he was outside and we were inside. He had no problems i would check up on him every 10 minutes but as soon as it got smaller it would be every 5 then once it was too small it went in the bin.

He wouldnt have them when nobody was home and when he gets them for dinner i supervise while he eats them in his crate.

Author: Mrs Milly

Thanks Spanner. Once this had been done did she lead a normal life? I read they can get brittle bones and need their diet supplemented by vitamins, but I can't see why there would be any need for this.

The vet said to just keep an eye on her. Weird turn of events, I wanted to get her neutered after her first season, but the rescue said sorry had to be 6 months. As this has now come to light, it could have been a blessing in disguise as the vet said as she hasn't had a season there are no hormones in her system, so hopefully, no further growth will take place, but to keep an eye just in case.

Author: Migsy

There are a lot of pedigree dogs in rescue centres.Paying shed loads of money doesn't mean a dog will be well cared for.Breeders dump their unsold pups on the rescue centres too.
It is a scandal to charge hundreds of pounds for what is a cross breed.
The whole thing is a mess, and I hope the programme is shown.
As Rubyroo stated, the last programme opened a lot of peoples eyes to what is going on.

Author: zahada

Does he still have his premolars and molars? If so, he should still be able to crunch a chicken wing.

You could also chop up chicken carcasses or backs quite finely. They're easy. It's chicken wings that are not so easy to chop up finely - because of the skin. But you can use the chopper to break the bones in chicken wings.

Otherwise look for raw dog suppliers that include bone in their minced range.

He is unlikely to break teeth on small (young) chicken wings or lamb breast bones. Therefore if you are going to get your chicken wings in a supermarket look for packs with lots of them - they'll be from younger chickens therefore softer bones.

Author: Migsy

A very old trick that worked 100% for our dog when he used to
roll in fox poo etc, is tomato ketchup! Stand dog in bath, smother soiled areas in ketchup, rubbing well into coat,
don't worry,it wont stain white fur,(Skip has a lot of white
fur)Then rinse and proceed to shower/bath with usual dog shampoo.
Befor I was told about this,Skip still stank after 3 baths
for rolling in fox poo.
A very good shampoo for whiffy dogs is Byotrol.

The only problem i have is in the cold my Hairless chinese crested gets sore and dry on the tops of paws and legs i have literally just gave him an oatmeal bath to soothe it and hes now snuggled on my lap in a towel.
Author: Labramatian

I don't do flyball but perhaps you could use a clicker and some tasty treats.

Have the box out and perhaps your dog on a lead initially, take him over to the box and just stand with him - don't force him to do anything. If he shows an interest in the box or just looks at it - click and treat. After a couple of looks ask for a bit more before you click - perhaps a sniff and then a nose touch or a paw and so on.

Keep asking for more once he is taking an interest in the box and fingers crossed he will see the box as a rewarding thing rather than something to be scared of.

Author: jacob123

If there are any Schnauzer owners out there, I and others at the schnauzer forum have organised a large dog walk for schnauzers, it is being held on a weekend during May, the dates are 19th and 20th, the location for the walk is the peak district and at the moment the venue is dovedale, if anyone owns a schnauzer of any sort and is interested in joining the walk please contact me as I can give more info and advise on caravan sites etc as we are making a weekend of it and walking on the saturday and the sunday! Many thanks

Author: CnT

Hey, my names Charlotte and i'm 20, ive been on here a few weeks but never really introduced myself :P

I live on a farm so have 3 Labradors, 2 ex racing Greyhounds, a Norwhich terrier but my own dog is a petite funny looking Staffie, both her parents are Staffs but she doesnt look like one as she has a long muzzle and a curly tail :p But she is my pride and joy. Ive had her since she was 8 weeks old and next month she will be 8!! She really doesnt act her age racing around the fields when im doing farm chores lol.
Im currently between jobs atm but have an interview with a rescue centre so fingers crossed I get it and can help find all the furbabies new forever homes :)

I enjoy dancing, horse riding but most of all I enjoy spending time with my dog as we are both nuts :p

Hi Gypsy, I got a MSG back from Ness last night and it was a long one packed with friendly advice on Lola's food issue and compliments on how I am obviously trying hard to give her the best and that I have a good support network to help (my forum buddies!). She is also sending out a free sample of their sensitive Fish and potato kibble and wants me to pass on her thanks for the recommendation and best wishes to you. : ) yay. Xxxx

I've sent a few of our clients Ness's way for free samples and so on and they've all spoke very highly of her. She also tends to enclose quite a bit of written info on common diet complaints with the free samples.

Hope it helps and let us know how Lola gets on. :)
