Thank you for your reply - it's good to hear from an actual owner of one rather than relying on everything you read.It was mixed feeling between the Daxy or a Cocker Spaniel - maybe more suitable.

Just a suggestion but have you tried clicker training with Colin. As I previously said I own a Dalmatian - famed for being stubborn and hard to train although they are very clever.

I would agree with this - my Lab is very biddable and does what you tell her but the Dal is very much - what's in it for me! I have successfully trained Tess to do tricks using the clicker!Definately worth a go in my opinion!

So Jenna, does that mean you've managed to talk your other half round then??

I think Cocker spaniels are fab! They are very popular in my family, overall a healthy breed, very trainable and great for lifting over fences!!

Still talking Gypsy but researching in the mean time!I'm baby-sitting my friends collie x bearded collie while she is on holiday so will get a taste of what having 3 would be like!

Defo something smaller - but needs to be able to keep up with the other two.

I do not believe dogs DO stubborn. I DO believe that not all dogs can be trained the same way, they are motivated by different things. Daxies are hounds and were bred to go down badger holes, so it aint no lap dog!

On the continent they do blood tracking with them, particularly the wires (or teckels as they call them in Germany) which are very good tracking dogs.

I know all dogs can't be trained in the same way - Luci & Colin are proof of that.
I do believe dogs can be stubborn, and I do believe Colin is stubborn, or moreover, will not do anything without some sort of bribe. I know my own dog.
I know what Daxies were bred for, so this is not news to me. I'm aware they're not lap dogs, but to be honest, I'm failing to follow the point of that post

I agree

I have known and had lots of experience with lots and lots of Bull terriers. Dogs do do stubborn.

Hi Jenna, you're welcome for the reply Sorry if I've put you off!
A cocker would probably be better for you, to keep up with your other dogs - when are you getting another dog?

I have a clicker, but decided against using it when I realised just how heavily the training method relied on treats. However, lots of people do swear by it, so I guess it's worth a shot. Won't do any harm to try it, and I'm pretty sure Colin would enjoy it (loves his treats, that dog!!!)
Thanks for the suggestion - Clair.

You used the word stubborn in your original post implying that this was the reason for the failure of your Daxie to be house trained.

Hence why I mentioned it, it was you that mentioned it first!

I repeat dogs do not do stubborn, it is simple to train any dog provided that you a) make it simple enough for the dog to understand and b) provide sufficient reward.

Using food CORRECTLY is not bribery, using it INCORRECTLY is.

Unless of course you are implying that being paid for work is bribery rather than a wage?!

Many of our top Obedience, Working Trials, Agility, HWTM Champions are trained using food AND by using a clicker.

Including Mary Ray's dogs to name but one top handler.

But if you do not want to use food and you can use another reinforcer successfully and your training is successful, then you do not have to use it.

Well, that's a matter of opinion, not fact, so we'll have to agree to disagree on that one, m'dear

And that is not what I said or implied about using treats to train a dog. I simply don't want to have to rely on them to get my dog to do what I want. My dog is prone to weight gain, and so the more treats I give him (whether they be low calorie or not), the less dinner he can have, and I'd rather he had more of his good quality food than treats.

I know it may be a bit "outside the box" m'dear, but have you ever thought of actually using his FOOD as treats?

There is no reason why you have to give a dog EXTRA and no reason why a dog should get a free bowl of food.

After all, in the wild they would have to work for it or earn it.

Just a thought, hundreds of us train our dogs this way, it also saves money!

And dogs not being stubborn, IS a fact, you see, dogs do what works, that is how they survive, there is no reason for them to be stubborn as their minds do not work like ours (thank god)!

But labelling a dog stubborn is what people often do to excuse their lack of training skills. Much better to blame the dog for a failure than themselves!

Oh my God, how old are you? Having a dig at people on the internet. I did that when I was about 12

Yes, I use his kibble as well as extra tasty treats, thank you very much.

And I'm sorry, but do you know me? Do you know my dogs? NO. So keep your unwelcome assumptions and Miss-Know-It-All attitude to yourself, and put your claws away

Thank you, dog expert

Well said Mousey!!

Just do as we do and pay no attention to smokeybear.
Their attitude does not belong in this forum.

I can confirm that dogs DO do stubborn... I have a stubborn dog myself.

Re:Stubborn Dachshund 1 Year, 6 Months ago
not wanting to butt in or anything, and im not going to judge on whether or not a dog can be classed as 'stubborn' i think these dogs sometimes misunderstand the task being asked of them, which is why they sometimes dont do it. Or maybe there is a psychological blockage that is stopping the dog from doing it, but tbh im nobody to judge, just my opinion. As i know sometimes if Kizzy is 'stubborn' and won't do something, its just that shes being dominant and im not asking her correctly and she just thinks 'im boss - im not doing what you want' haha so maybe in some ways i agree with smokey, however, i do think sometimes your comments do come across as a bit in your face and people may take them the wrong way. I think maybe people feel that you're just telling them your ideas with no le-way for any other opinions. whether that is true or not i don't know and i doubt you are trying to do that but thats just sometimes how it comes across (dont take offence please) from the comments i think i speak for many of the people here. but as i said im new here and am nobody to judge, just an opinion
