oily coat 1 Year, 6 Months ago
took my dog, hooch , out this morning and some clever """" , decided to dump engine oil in the stream where i take him, it was clear yesterday but this morning hooch ran out with 4 grey socks, upon checking, found it is engine oil, ive used washing powder and washing up liquid, then found a site that said vegetable oil can be used to break down the oil and then be washed off, after rinsing down and shampooing his legs wit his regular shampoo most of the oil has dissapeared but cant get rid of it all, im hoping the little bit left will fade away. ive contacted enviromental health to look into it, its just a warning really of where we allow our dogs to run when exercising, after i read this can be fatal if ingested.

Welcome dazzaone!

Hope your dog is ok. I don't know what type of dog you have but mine has quite feathery feet, so I'd probably just trim off the fur with oil still on. However this may not be an option with yours though.

Pleased you rang environmental health; apart from the damage it could have caused your dog (which is bad enough) think of the damage caused to wildlife.

Stupid people who either don't think or just don't care!

You are probablyh not as old as me, but when the Torrey Canyon caused a lot of oily birds, I used to rescue them on the coast and get them to the wildlife people.

My clothes and body often got covered in tar, the best thing to get it off is lard, but you MUST shampoo the dog afterwards because licking a lot of lard aint good either.

If you do not want to use lard, get swarfega from places like B & Q; this is what mechanics use to take the oil of themselves and is very safe for the skin.

thanks to all who `ve wrote, through a lot of soapy water, and finding out about the vegetable oil , the majority has come off, its only tiny little parts on him where ive washed over that remain but have faded to a paler colour , and about an hour ago, the local council were there taking a look and they also dragged a burnt out motorbike from there saying that was the cause, but thankyou all, and i shall try the lard tomorrow to see if it gets the splattersout , ty so much, dont wanna stress him too much inb one day:-)
