Dog advice - Training

Charlie Clarricotes is an educational director for the Cambridge Institute of Dog Behaviour & Training. He has worked closely with dogs for the past twenty years and currently sees nearly 4,000 dogs and their owners each year at his training centre near Cambridge. In addition to writing books and appearing on television, Charlie also has the time to be our resident dog behaviour and training expert.

Grooming sessions for puppies should not last long and should be an enjoyable experience for your puppy. If you force your puppy to sit still and endure a lengthy grooming session, they will begin to associate grooming with a negative experience, which will make grooming sessions in later life more difficult.

Top tips:

  • Use treats to entice your puppy to stay still and focus their attention.
  • Using a food bowl will keep your dog’s head down.
  • Keep grooming sessions short, as a puppies’ attention will only last a short time.

Each month, Your Dog magazine is packed full of useful articles on health, breeds, training, feeding, grooming and general lifestyle features for those who love dogs. For more information see the subscription page
