It has been law for dogs to wear ID tags in public areas since the Control of Dogs Act was introduced in 1992.

Any dogs found without ID tags displaying their owner's name and address (including postcode), can be fined up to £5,000.

By law you do not have to include a contact phone number but it is strongly advised.

It is generally agreed that including the dog's name is not recommended.

Micro-chipping your pet is also suggested, however, this is not a substitute for a proper ID tag.

There are some exceptions to the ID tag law, for example; dogs used by customs or armed forces, sporting dogs or pest control, herding cattle, guide dogs and dogs used for emergency rescue work.
