Ten walks for the weekend E-mail

Thetford Forest offers excellent walks
Thetford Forest offers excellent walks

Stuck for a place to take your dog for a walk this weekend? Why not go off exploring somewhere new!

Dogfriendlybritain has these recommendations:

Clumber Park, Worksop, Nottinghamshire (National Trust)
3,800 acres of green space to enjoy. The man-made lake offers a four mile, off lead, walk around its banks. Limetree Avenue, almost three miles long, and the Pleasure Grounds offer pretty good ‘on lead’ walks too!

Westonbirt Arboretum, Westonbirt, Gloucestershire (Forestry Commission)
Dogs, and owners, can explore, off the lead, the sights and smells of Silk Wood, (which covers two thirds of the Arboretum), and the whole of The Downs area. (At certain times of the year, to maintain the sward, sheep and cattle may graze The Downs, so please keep dogs on a lead near livestock).

Trellissick Garden, nr Truro, Cornwall (National Trust)
Although dogs are not allowed inside the beautiful gardens at Trellissick, there is a wonderful park & woodland walk around the outside of the gardens.

New Forest, Hampshire (Forestry Commission).
Although this a name that everyone recognises it should be remembered that The New Forest is only one of dozens of forests available to dog walkers across England, Scotland & Wales. A survey conducted for FCS (Forestry Commission Scotland) showed that dog walking – 50% - was the most popular activity undertaken in the forests!

Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh.

Maybe not the place that everyone would immediately think of as a great dog walk, but one which is certainly popular!

Rhossili Bay Beach, Swansea Bay.

A spectacular sandy beach which is at the tip of the Gower Peninsular: Miles of beautiful beach with year round access for dogs. It should be noted that access at Rhossili is via steps.

Thetford Forest, situated on the border of Norfolk & Suffolk (Forestry Commission).
A trip to the Suffolk, Norfolk or the Broads could be broken up with a dog walking stop here.

Bamburgh Beach, Bamburgh, Northumberland.

A large sandy beach, with sand dunes, make this a great place for dogs to play. (It should be noted that nearby Bamburgh Castle is not dog friendly!

Hyde Park, London.
Many people may be surprised to know that their dog is as welcome in many of the Royal Parks of London as they themselves are.

Hampstead Heath, London.

Just four miles from Trafalgar Square, Hampstead Heath provides almost 800 acres of varied landscape including woodland, meadow and heathland.
