![]() PC Cook's dogs help protect Sellafield against terrorism PC Colin Cook, who has served in the Civil Nuclear Constabulary since 1982, has received a National Lifetime Achievement Award from All About Dogs, for his dog handling work. Colin was nominated by CNC senior management and a panel of judges who honoured him with a lifetime achievement award, one of only two given out over the last eight years. He joined the dog section in 1985, patrolling the Sellafield site. By the nineties he had become an instructor and realised that the best way to get quality dogs was to breed them – so established a programme that is still producing puppies today. Enlisting the help of his wife Margaret, he set up the whelping unit where puppies spend their early weeks at his Whitehaven home. From Kelly, the first puppy donated by Greater Manchester Police in 1997, he has bred 30 German Shepherds with all but a handful becoming police dogs. Colin, who is based at the Force’s Dog Training Facility at Sellafield, said: “I have told two Chief Constables that I have the best job in the force - and I have. German Shepherds make fantastic police dogs - they look the part and are agile and courageous. They play a big part in keeping Sellafield safe." The dogs are trained to the same standard as Home Office police forces such as Cumbria Constabulary. Kelly is now in well earned retirement, living with Colin and Margaret. As ever Colin is looking to the future and is currently puppy walking Echo, one of the Constabulary’s newest puppy recruits. Find out more about Cumbrian Police dogs here |
