| All London dogs microchipped? |

The Kennel Club has issued its support for the newly proposed Bill, arguing that the breed specific nature of the Dangerous Dogs Act has not stopped large volumes of dog attacks from taking place. Known as the ‘Dog Control Act’, the new legislation, if approved, will ban dogs on their behaviour and for the first time, the dog’s owner will be used to determine if a dog is a risk to public safety. In addition to public dog attacks, the act will also make attacks, which take place on private property against the law. “The Dangerous Dogs Act is a bad piece of legislation that places the responsibility on dogs, this Bill puts the responsibility on the owners themselves,” said Lord Redesdale. The Kennel Club, a founder member of the Dangerous Dogs Act, alongside the Blue Cross, Dogs Trust and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, have pledged their support for the new Bill. “The Kennel Club has been working with Lord Redesdale and a number of other organisations to provide assistance and advice in drafting his Bill,” said The Kennel Club’s Caroline Kisko. “The current legislation is draconian and severely flawed, and does little to protect the public.” The proposed Bill comes after Major of London Boris Johnson promised to work with London Borough Councils to “deal with dangerous dogs.” The Bill is being trialled in London and currently Wandsworth council has made it compulsory for all dogs living on estates to be microchipped. |
