'Weapon dogs' seized daily

Two potentially dangerous dogs are seized by the Metropolitan Police almost every day, new figures reveal.

Officers tackling an explosion of dog-related violence and intimidation in London took 719 animals off the streets in the last financial year. Almost 600 pre-planned operations took place as regular officers and a new specialist unit dealt with 1,891 calls from the public.

The work left the taxpayer to pick up the £1.3 million cost of kennelling up to 302 dogs as well as vet bills and transport costs. Senior officers have admitted London is the nation's hotspot for dog fighting and the use of aggressive animals, dubbed 'weapon dogs', to intimidate others.
