Hearing Dog Awards |
 Esther Rantzen presents awards, right: Eddie and Nicola. Eddie, a three-year-old Bichon Frise, has been named Life-Changing Hearing Dog of the Year and presented with the award by TV presenter Esther Rantzen, at the charity’s summer fayre held at their HQ in Buckinghamshire. The Life-Changing commendation is given to a dog that has made an enormous difference to their owner’s lives by providing vital services. Eddie has been trained to alert his owner, Nicola, to everyday household sounds including the doorbell, telephone, cooker timer and alarm clock - touching her with a paw when he hears a sound and leading her to the source of the sound. When Eddie detects danger sounds such as the smoke alarms or fire bells, he alerts Nicola by pawing her then dropping straight to the floor. When Nicola lost her hearing suddenly in her twenties, she suffered form panic attacks and depression. Eddie helped change all this, as the Life-Changing Award committee has recognised.
