Canine cancer vaccine |
|
![]() A medical forum in Texas was the stage for an announcement that a new cancer vaccine will soon become available to vets worldwide in the next few years. Professor Rosemary Calderon gave a speech to the assembly at the ACVIM Forum in San Antonio, Texas on June 4, outlining the key aspects of the new Xenogenic DNA Vaccine. Aimed specifically at the management of Melanomas in both dogs and humans, the new drugs are designed to fool the bodies’ immune system into seeing the tumour as foreign tissue and dissolving it. “Even though the diseases are very different (in dogs and people), in terms of tumour location, they are very similar in that they are usually very aggressive in both species,” said Professor Calderon. At present the vaccine is being tested on dogs with naturally occurring melanomas and has seen some encouraging results. Human testing is just around the corner and hopes within the drugs and veterinary industries are high. |
